CSET Physical Education Subtest I (Test Code 129) is the first of three subtests required to demonstrate subject matter competency for a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Physical Education in California. It is administered by Pearson on behalf of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
Subtest I focuses on the foundational science behind movement and motor development — how people grow, learn, and refine physical skills, and how the body's systems function during exercise and activity. It is more academic than athletic: the exam tests your understanding of kinesiology, physiology, and motor learning theory, not your coaching résumé or playing experience.
You must pass all three subtests (129, 130, 131) to complete the CSET Physical Education subject matter requirement through examination. Each subtest is scored independently, and candidates may register for one subtest, two, or all three in a single test session.
Subtest I consists of 40 multiple-choice questions and 2 short (focused) constructed-response questions, administered over 1 hour and 45 minutes at a Pearson test center. The exam is computer-based only.

Multiple-choice and constructed-response sections are weighted 70% and 30% respectively toward your overall scaled score. A distinctive feature of Subtest I (and Subtest III) is the videotaped constructed-response component: you'll watch a brief video excerpt — typically showing a movement, skill, or teaching scenario — and then write a response analyzing or applying course content to what you saw.
Subtest I is offered only as a computer-based test at an in-person Pearson test center. Unlike Subtest II, it is not available through online proctoring. Candidates can register to take Subtest I alone, or combine it with Subtests II and III in a single 5-hour session.
Subtest I is built from two content domains, each contributing 20 multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question. Understanding this breakdown is the fastest way to plan your study time efficiently.

Important: Domain 2 (The Science of Human Movement) spans more individual topic areas than Domain 1, but both domains carry equal weight — 20 multiple-choice questions and one constructed-response question each. Don't let the longer topic list in Domain 2 crowd out your review time for Domain 1.

The exam rewards candidates who can connect scientific and developmental concepts to real classroom application — not just recall definitions. Candidates who struggle typically treat this as a coaching-knowledge test rather than the academic kinesiology exam it actually is.
This 6-week plan works for most candidates with some prior coursework or professional experience in physical education or kinesiology. Compress it if you have a recent kinesiology degree; extend it if both domains are new to you.
Take a diagnostic practice set to identify weak areas. Begin Domain 1: individual differences, perceptual-motor development, and physical/developmental changes across age groups.
Study stages of motor learning, practice and feedback theory, and how to break a movement skill into teachable components through task analysis.
Review the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, then move into kinematic, kinetic, and biomechanical principles of motion.
Cover the effects of exercise on the body, components of wellness, physical fitness testing, and the physiological principles behind fitness improvement.
Write one short constructed response each day, alternating between domains. Practice the videotaped-response format specifically — outline your answer while the clip is fresh, then write.
Do a full timed run-through under exam conditions (1 hour 45 minutes). Review every missed concept, and spend your final days on your weaker domain.
