A structured 30-day plan to prepare for CSET Spanish Subtest I. Follow this week by week — from diagnostic test to final review — with daily tasks that fit around a busy schedule.

Week 1 — Diagnostic & Domain 1 Foundations

Goal: Understand your starting point and build a foundation in Domain 1 linguistics.

Week 1 · Days 1–7 Diagnostic + Domain 1: Phonology & Morphology

Day 1

Take the full diagnostic practice test. Do not study first — you want honest results. Record which domains and topics you missed most.

Day 2

Review your diagnostic results. Make a list of your top 5 weak areas. Download the official SMRs from ctcexams.nesinc.com and highlight the competencies where you missed questions.

Day 3

Study Spanish phonology: the 5 vowel system, consonant inventory, the r/rr distinction (tap vs. trill), and syllabification rules. Write out examples for each concept.

Day 4

Study regional variation: seseo (Latin America), yeísmo (ll/y merger), voseo (Argentina), Caribbean Spanish features. Know the terminology and which regions use which features.

Day 5

Study Spanish stress rules: penultimate stress default (words ending in vowel/n/s), final stress (other consonants), written accent marks as exceptions. Practice with 20 example words.

Day 6

Study morphology: derivational vs. inflectional morphemes, common prefixes and suffixes, verb conjugation as inflectional morphology. Practice identifying morphemes in 15 words.

Day 7

Week 1 review. Re-read your notes from Days 3–6. Write out from memory: the 5 vowel sounds, 3 regional variation features, stress rules, and 5 examples of derivational morphemes.

Week 2 — SLA Theory & Sociolinguistics

Goal: Master second language acquisition theory — the highest-yield Domain 1 content.

Week 2 · Days 8–14 Krashen's Hypotheses, Interlanguage & Sociolinguistics

Day 8

Study Krashen's Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis and Natural Order Hypothesis. Write a one-paragraph explanation of each in your own words. Be able to give a classroom example for each.

Day 9

Study Krashen's Input Hypothesis (i+1) and Monitor Hypothesis. Know the i+1 concept deeply — it is the most frequently tested. Practice explaining it without notes.

Day 10

Study Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis. Learn interlanguage and fossilization. Know how a high affective filter blocks acquisition and what classroom conditions lower it.

Day 11

Study code-switching: what it is, why it is not a deficiency, how bilinguals use it strategically. Study the difference between dialect and accent. Know the linguistic definition of each.

Day 12

Study sociolinguistics: register (formal vs. informal), pragmatics (how context shapes meaning), speech acts, and the difference between conversational and academic language.

Day 13

Practice answering 20 Domain 1 questions from the practice test. Review each explanation carefully — do not just check right/wrong.

Day 14

Week 2 review. Write Krashen's 5 hypotheses from memory with a one-sentence definition each. Explain code-switching and register in your own words.

Week 3 — Domain 2: Grammar & Reading

Goal: Deep review of high-frequency grammar topics and reading comprehension strategies.

Week 3 · Days 15–21 Grammar, Reading Comprehension & Vocabulary

Day 15

Subjunctive mood: WEIRDO triggers (Wishes, Emotion, Impersonal expressions, Requests, Doubt/Denial, Ojalá). Study present and imperfect subjunctive forms. Write 10 example sentences.

Day 16

Ser vs. estar: all use cases, including ser + adjective for inherent characteristics vs. estar + adjective for states. Study ser/estar + past participle contrast. Write 15 sentences.

Day 17

Por vs. para, preterite vs. imperfect, si clauses (hypothetical and contrary-to-fact). Study one topic at a time with 10 practice examples each.

Day 18

Read two authentic Spanish texts (newspaper editorial + short academic paragraph). Practice identifying: main idea, supporting details, author's purpose, vocabulary in context, text structure.

Day 19

Vocabulary: study the top 20 false cognates (embarazado, sensible, librería, éxito, etc.). Study cohesive devices: sin embargo, por lo tanto, además, no obstante, es decir, puesto que.

Day 20

Object pronouns (order and placement), reflexive verbs, passive se, commands (tú and usted, affirmative and negative). Write 5 example sentences for each.

Day 21

Week 3 review. Do 25 grammar + reading questions from the practice test under timed conditions. Review every explanation.

Week 4 — Writing Practice & Full Review

Goal: Build constructed-response writing fluency and identify remaining gaps before exam day.

Week 4 · Days 22–30 Writing Practice, Full Tests & Final Review

Day 22

Write your first timed constructed-response. Topic: write a formal paragraph explaining the importance of bilingual education in California schools (15 minutes). Review for grammar errors, register, and organization.

Day 23

Write a constructed-response correcting errors in a Spanish passage and explaining each correction. Focus on using metalinguistic vocabulary: subjuntivo, modo indicativo, concordancia, etc.

Day 24

Write a formal paragraph responding to a reading passage. Practice: topic sentence → 3 supporting details with evidence → concluding sentence. Time yourself to 15 minutes.

Day 25

Full timed practice test — all 100 questions, 3-hour simulation. Take it seriously: no breaks, no phone. Record your score and which domains you missed.

Day 26

Review every missed question from Day 25. For each wrong answer, write out why the correct answer is right and why you missed it. This is the highest-value study activity.

Day 27

Focus on your weakest domain from Day 25 results. If Domain 1: re-review Krashen and phonology. If Domain 2: re-review subjunctive and reading strategies.

Day 28

Final writing practice: one full constructed-response set (2 prompts, 30 minutes total). Proofread carefully. Check for accent marks, gender agreement, and subjunctive triggers.

Day 29

Light review only. Re-read your Week 1–2 notes on Krashen and phonology. Review your personal list of grammar points you missed most. No new material today.

Day 30

Rest. Prepare your admission ticket and two valid IDs. Confirm your testing center location and arrival time. Get a full night of sleep. You are ready.

Daily Study Tips

Make each study session count

Study in focused blocks. 60 minutes of focused study beats 3 hours of distracted review. Use a timer.
Write, do not just read. Writing out concepts from memory is far more effective than re-reading notes.
Review mistakes immediately. When you get a practice question wrong, read the full explanation before moving on.
Use the SMRs as a checklist. As you study each competency, check it off. Unchecked items need more time.
Vary your material. Alternate between grammar review, linguistics theory, reading practice, and writing. Variety prevents fatigue.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the diagnostic. Without knowing your starting point, you may waste time on strong areas and miss your real gaps.
Studying grammar only. Domain 1 linguistics is equally important and takes longer to learn. Do not leave it for the last week.
Not writing in Spanish daily. The constructed-response rubric rewards accuracy and organization — these improve only through practice.
Passive review. Re-reading notes feels productive but is far less effective than testing yourself, writing from memory, or answering practice questions.
Ignoring false cognates. They appear regularly on the exam and are easy points once you know them.
