A one-page quick reference for the grammar topics most heavily tested on CSET Spanish Subtest I — subjunctive triggers, ser/estar, por/para, preterite/imperfect, object pronouns, commands, and more.
The subjunctive is required after expressions falling into one of six categories, remembered by the acronym WEIRDO.
| Context | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective clauses | Subjunctive when antecedent is unknown/non-existent | Busco un libro que tenga esa información. |
| Temporal conjunctions | Subjunctive when referring to future/hypothetical time | Llámame cuando llegues. |
| Negated belief verbs | Subjunctive after no creer que, no pensar que | No creo que él tenga razón. |
| Use SER for | Use ESTAR for |
|---|---|
| Identity / profession — Es maestra. | Location — Está en la escuela. |
| Origin / nationality — Es de México. | Temporary condition — Está cansado. |
| Inherent characteristics — Es alto. | Ongoing action (progressive) — Está hablando. |
| Time / dates — Son las tres. | Resulting state (past participle) — La puerta está abierta. |
| Material / possession — Es de madera. | Emotional/physical state — Está feliz. |
Ser + past participle = passive voice (action by an agent). Estar + past participle = resulting condition. La puerta fue abierta por el viento (was opened, action) vs. La puerta está abierta (is open, state).
| Use Preterite for | Use Imperfect for |
|---|---|
| Completed actions with clear endpoint — Comí a las ocho. | Habitual/repeated past actions — Comía a las ocho todos los días. |
| Sequence of events — Llegó, abrió la puerta y entró. | Background description / ongoing state — Hacía frío y llovía. |
| Interrupting action — Sonó el teléfono. | Action in progress when interrupted — Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono. |
| Use POR for | Use PARA for |
|---|---|
| Duration — por tres horas | Recipient — para mi madre |
| Movement through — caminar por el parque | Purpose / goal — estudiar para el examen |
| Cause/reason — por la lluvia | Deadline — para el lunes |
| Exchange — gracias por tu ayuda | Destination — salir para España |
When indirect and direct object pronouns appear together, indirect comes before direct, and both precede a conjugated verb.
| English | Spanish | Order |
|---|---|---|
| She explains it to us. | Ella nos lo explica. | nos (indirect) + lo (direct) |
| I gave it to him. | Yo se lo di. | le→se (before lo/la) + lo |
Special rule: Indirect object pronouns le/les become se when followed by a direct object pronoun starting with l- (lo, la, los, las).
| Form | Affirmative | Negative |
|---|---|---|
| Tú (informal) | Present indicative él/ella form — Habla. | Present subjunctive — No hables. |
| Usted (formal) | Present subjunctive — Hable. | Present subjunctive — No hable. |
| Type | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Real/likely condition | si + present, present/future/command | Si estudias, aprobarás. |
| Contrary-to-fact (present) | si + imperfect subjunctive, conditional | Si tuviera tiempo, viajaría. |
| Contrary-to-fact (past) | si + pluperfect subjunctive, conditional perfect | Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado. |
Never use the conditional tense directly after si in a hypothetical clause — this is one of the most common errors tested on the exam.
| Ending | Change | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -car | c → qu before e | buscar → busqué |
| -gar | g → gu before e | llegar → llegué |
| -zar | z → c before e | empezar → empecé |
