How Constructed Responses Are Actually Scored
Short (focused) responses (Oral ×2, Listening ×1, Reading ×1, Written ×1) are scored on a 1–3 scale using three performance characteristics:
- Purpose — how fully the response addresses what the prompt asks
- Subject Matter Knowledge — accuracy of the content/language knowledge applied
- Support — quality and specificity of the supporting evidence or examples
The extended written response is scored on a 1–4 scale using those same three characteristics plus a fourth:
- Depth and Breadth of Understanding — how thoroughly the response demonstrates command of the relevant subject matter
